Special Problem
New York based DJ and music producer SPECIAL PROBLEM blends soulful Afro house, deep grooves, and global dance culture. Based in New York City and born in Japan, he is also the founder of Culture Connection Radio, a platform dedicated to connecting cultures through music.
He began his journey at the age of 13 through dance and record collecting, developing a deep understanding of rhythm, movement, and musical storytelling. That early foundation continues to shape his approach today, with sets that move fluidly across soulful deep house, Afro house, and groove driven dance music influenced by the streets and energy of New York.
Artist Statement
Through Culture Connection Radio, SPECIAL PROBLEM connects DJs and sounds from around the world while maintaining strong ties with the South African Afro house and deep house movement, including artists such as DJ Kabila, Enoo Napa, Culoe De Song, DJ Lesoul, and 2lani The Warrior, among others. His sound blends soulful Afro house with deep grooves, creating sets known for elegant progression and powerful dance floor energy.
He has performed at respected venues and international events including the legendary Cielo in New York’s Meatpacking District, Art Basel in Miami, Bronze in Washington DC, and clubs across Philadelphia. He has held a residency at James Rooftop Soho and has also performed at the Williamsburg Hotel in Brooklyn, and appeared internationally, including Compufunk in Japan. His musical journey was also closely connected with Voodoo Ray (R.I.P.), an important figure in New York’s dance community.
SPECIAL PROBLEM also curates Opulent Cadence, a mix series reflecting his signature blend of soulful Afro house, deep grooves, and refined dance floor storytelling. With roots in classic dance culture and a global vision for modern dance music, SPECIAL PROBLEM continues to connect cultures and dance floors across the world.
