Michael alexander pio harper

Michael Alexander Pio Harper (b. 1999, New York, NY) is an artist, art historian, and researcher/curator. Across his art historical and artistic practices, Michael aims to trouble Italian Futurist and modernist legacies, queering and reworking them for our contemporary moment.

Michael received his BA and MA in the History of Art at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. His thesis, titled "Force-Lines and Fault Lines: Paradoxes of Movement, Art Historiography, and Photography during Italian Futurism’s 'Classical' Period (1909-1914)," explored Futurist tensions with photography, art historiography, and 19th century scientific studies of animal locomotion. This research into Futurist visual mechanisms of movement— art historically and scientifically rooted—has had a sustained impact on Harper's approach to art making.

Michael has held positions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Johns Hopkins University’s Special Collections, The Evergreen Museum & Library, The Valerie J. Maynard Foundation, and currently at Arader Galleries NYC. Michael lives and works in New York, NY.
