Melanie doulton

Melanie Doulton is a New York-based artist and a graduate of Hunter College’s Studio Art BA program. Her series Vestiges: Last Impressions consists of monotypes created using discarded saris and fabric remnants. The works preserve the patterns, textures, and frayed edges of textiles whose personal histories are no longer known, transforming traces of once-worn materials into images that reflect on memory, absence, and material history.

Vestiges: Last Impressions

A vestige is a trace or visible sign of something that once was. These monotypes preserve impressions of saris that once held meaning in the lives of their creators and wearers. The garments now survive as scraps and trimmings repurposed for crafting, their personal histories unknown to us. Patterns, textures, and frayed edges leave their traces on paper, inviting viewers to imagine the lives these fabrics once touched and the journeys that brought them here—from garment to fragment, and from fragment to image.
