Charles slamowitz
I am a conceptual multimedia artist with a background in Design, originally based in Canada. My creative background has developed through both formal design education and independent artistic practice, with experience across sculpture, installation, experimental materials, and animal preservation. I have also lived abroad in England, including spending significant time in London, where I pursued my art independently and became increasingly interested in contemporary exhibition spaces, alternative art scenes, and large-scale installation practices.
Living abroad has strongly influenced the direction of my work and encouraged me to develop a practice that can exist internationally rather than being tied to one location. My experience in design has provided a foundation in visual communication, research, conceptual development, and presentation, while my independent practice has allowed me to develop a more unconventional artistic identity. I am currently focused on expanding my body of work, building relationships within the international art community, and pursuing opportunities to exhibit my work in Canada, the US, and internationally.
SELECTED works
I keep coming back to the same idea: the best things in this city happen in small rooms with open doors. Current Arts is 550 square feet on Essex Street, free every day, and I have watched strangers walk in and leave as friends. My job is advisor, but what I really do is champion. I handle the contracts, the collectors, the brands, the story, all the machinery that decides whether an artist gets a career or just a compliment. I learned it the hard way, building and selling my own company, then years as the lawyer creative people called when it mattered. Now I am making the gallery's first coffee-table book, because if you do not document a place like this, the city forgets it ever burned that bright. I am a lawyer who writes books, a founder who fell for a gallery, a night person who believes friendship takes fifty hours and most of them should be spent in rooms like this one. New York has more genius than champions. I plan to fix the ratio.xz
